How Many Servings Does a Wedding Cake Need?

Plan one wedding-size slice per guest, then match that number to a tier stack. Two tiers serve 20, three tiers serve 48, 78 or 115, four tiers serve 130, and five tiers serve 136 or 210. A 10 inch kitchen cake adds 38 servings for $100 if you want a smaller cake on the table than the guest list would suggest.

The serving math

Every serving count I publish is built on a standard wedding slice, roughly one inch by two inches and the full height of the tier. That is how caterers cut, and it is how the numbers below work. If you plan to cut party-style wedges, treat the counts as generous and size up a tier.

Tiers Sizes Servings Price
Two 4 and 6 inch 20 $450
Three 4, 6 and 8 inch 48 $650
Three 6, 8 and 10 inch 78 $720
Three 8, 10 and 12 inch 115 $950
Four 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch 130 $1,075
Five 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch 136 $1,150
Five 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 inch 210 $1,850

When the table cake should be smaller than the guest list

The cake on the table is a photograph first and a dessert second. Many couples with 120 guests would rather have the 6, 8 and 10 inch three-tier, which serves 78 and photographs beautifully, than the 8, 10 and 12 inch stack that serves 115 and looks heavier. The kitchen cake solves it. It is a plain 10 inch double-layer cake in the same flavours, sliced out of sight and served alongside, 38 servings for $100. Seventy-eight plus 38 is 116, the table cake stays elegant, and nobody goes without.

When you need fewer servings than guests

If there is a dessert table, a plated dessert, or a late-night food truck, not everyone will take cake. Planning for two thirds of the guest count is common and it works. If the cake is the only dessert, plan for everyone, because the people who skip it are outnumbered by the people who come back for a second slice.

Cupcakes and minis for the numbers

Cupcakes start at $42 a dozen, filled cupcakes at $48, and minis at $24 a dozen, all in the flavours on my menu. They are the right answer for a large guest list at a casual reception, and a small display cake for the cutting keeps the photograph.

Questions about servings

Do all guests eat wedding cake?

Not always. If you are also serving a dessert table or plated dessert, many couples plan for two thirds of the guest count and it works. If the cake is the only dessert, plan for everyone.

What is a kitchen cake?

A plain single-tier cake in the same flavours as your display cake, sliced in the kitchen and served alongside it. A 10 inch double-layer kitchen cake serves 38 for $100 and lets the cake on the table be the size you want rather than the size the guest list demands.

How big is a wedding serving?

A wedding slice is about one inch by two inches and the height of the tier, which is around five inches. That is the standard the serving counts on this page are built on. Party-style slices are larger, so if you plan to cut generously, size up.
