A Planning Guide

The right cake size is a guest-count question first and a design question second.

Wedding cake servings at Sweet E’s range from 6 servings for a 4-inch single tier to 210 servings for a five-tier cake. A two-tier cake serves 20 to 60 guests, a three-tier cake serves 48 to 115, and four- and five-tier cakes serve 85 to 210, depending on the tier diameters you choose. For a wedding of 75 to 100 guests, a three-tier cake at 6, 8 and 10 inches (78 servings) or 8, 10 and 12 inches (115 servings) is the natural fit, and a 10-inch kitchen cake can quietly add 38 more servings whenever the guest list grows.

Servings are counted in wedding-style slices, and every size below is the exact chart I quote from on my pricing page. Sizes are listed by diameter in inches, and each tier stands about 5 inches tall. This guide walks through what each size serves, how to match a cake to 50, 100 or 150 guests, and when a supplemental kitchen cake or wedding cupcakes make more sense than a taller tier. If you already know your guest count, the wedding cake pricing guide covers what each size invests.

Wedding Cake Servings at a Glance

Every Sweet E’s cake is quoted by its tier sizes, and the servings follow from those diameters. The chart below is the full range, from a single tier for an elopement to a five-tier centerpiece for a 200-guest celebration. Starting prices reflect a round cake, and the final investment is shaped by design details, delivery location and 3% sales tax.

Which Size Fits Your Guest Count?

Up to 40 guests. A two-tier cake at 4 and 6 inches (20 servings) or 6 and 8 inches (40 servings) is right-sized for an elopement dinner or an intimate reception, and it still reads as a true wedding cake in photographs. My two-tier wedding cake guide goes deeper on sizes and design.

Around 50 guests. Choose between a two-tier cake at 8 and 10 inches (60 servings) and a three-tier cake at 4, 6 and 8 inches (48 servings). The two-tier feeds slightly more; the three-tier gives you the height that a taller ceiling or a grand cake table asks for.

Around 100 guests. The three-tier cake at 8, 10 and 12 inches (115 servings) covers the room on its own. If you prefer the drama of four tiers, the 4, 6, 8 and 10 inch four-tier (85 servings) paired with a 10-inch kitchen cake (38 servings) brings you to 123 servings. See the three-tier guide and the four-tier pricing guide for both paths.

150 guests and beyond. A four-tier cake at 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches (130 servings) with a kitchen cake, or a five-tier cake at 4 through 12 inches (136 servings), sizes comfortably for 150. For 200 or more, the 6 through 14 inch five-tier serves 210 and becomes the centerpiece of the room.

Do You Need a Serving for Every Guest?

Size to the number of guests you expect to be in the room when the cake is cut, not to the invitation list. If cake is the only dessert, plan a serving for each of them. If the cake shares the table with a dessert bar, cupcakes or truffles, a size one step smaller usually serves the evening well, and the cake remains the focal point while the desserts carry the volume.

One Sweet E’s detail changes the math in your favor: every multi-tier wedding cake includes a complimentary mini anniversary cake, baked fresh for your first anniversary. You never need to hold back the top tier for the freezer, so every serving in the chart above is a serving your guests can actually enjoy on the night.

The Kitchen Cake: More Servings Without a Taller Cake

A supplemental 10-inch double-layer kitchen cake adds 38 servings for $100. It is sliced behind the scenes and served alongside your display cake, so the room is served without a single extra tier on the stand. It is the most considered way to bridge a gap between the size you love and the number you need, and it keeps the display cake perfectly proportioned to its stand and table.

Cupcakes are the other elegant route to extra servings: regular cupcakes start at $42 per dozen, filled cupcakes at $48 per dozen and minis at $24 per dozen. Pairing a two- or three-tier display cake with a few dozen cupcakes on the dessert table lets guests choose a second flavor and keeps the cake cutting effortless for the venue staff.

How Tall Is a Three-Tier Wedding Cake?

Each Sweet E’s tier stands about 5 inches tall, so a three-tier wedding cake is roughly 15 inches of cake before the stand and any topper or florals. A four-tier reaches about 20 inches and a five-tier about 25. Height matters for the photographs as much as the servings do: a three-tier cake on a pedestal stand fills a standard cake table beautifully, while a five-tier is a piece of the room’s architecture. “Erika was so sweet to work with! She did an AMAZING job with my wedding cake! My husband chose cinnamon cake with dulce de leche, I am not one to go for cinnamon sweets, but I devoured that cinnamon cake! Our guests enjoyed both flavors we chose! I’ve had multiple people ask about it since. Thank you Erika for such a beautiful and delicious wedding cake and taking part in making my wedding day special!”
