Clean Lines, One Strong Idea

Geometry, color and negative space, built tier by tier.

Modern wedding cakes are defined by shape and structure rather than ornament: square or tall tiers, sculpted asymmetry, a single block of color, or a pattern spaced with plenty of bare buttercream around it. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake. Two tiers start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings and three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115, and sculpted or architectural designs usually land above the starting price for their size.

Below are the modern approaches I use, each on a real cake from my studio. The modern minimalist gallery holds more, and every tier and serving is listed with my wedding cake prices.

What Makes Modern Wedding Cakes Modern

A modern cake starts from structure. Instead of asking which flowers or how much piping, it asks what shape the cake should be: square, extra tall, stacked off-center, or broken by a single sculpted form. The surface then stays disciplined, with one color, one pattern or one detail, so the shape reads first.

That is different from a simple cake, which is about restraint in decoration. My guide to simple elegant wedding cakes covers that quieter approach; a modern cake can be bold, colorful or even dark, as long as the idea is clean.

Four Modern Approaches

Approach What It Looks Like Reads As
Geometry Square, tall or offset tiers with sharp edges Architectural
Sculpted form One asymmetric ruffle, fin or bow Couture
Color block A whole cake in one strong color or marble Bold
Negative space A pattern spaced across bare buttercream Minimal

Real Modern Cakes from My Studio

Square tiers stacked under a neon sign show geometry at its clearest: sharp corners, a few blush roses on the steps, nothing else. A sculpted ruffle running down one side of a white cake shows how a single form can carry the whole design. Color blocking goes the other way, with a navy and gold marble two-tier for a celebration at the Bright Building, part of my Provo wedding cakes collection, and a black three-tier with black beading, the look my black wedding cake page explores.

Negative space is the quietest version: a scatter of pearl dots on smooth white, or a combed finish with one cloud of baby’s breath on top. Texture is often what makes a minimal cake feel finished, and my guide to textured wedding cakes shows those finishes up close. For an all-white modern design, see my guide to white wedding cakes.

What a Modern Design Adds to the Investment

Tier count and servings set the base. Square tiers, extra height and sculpted forms take more structure and studio time, so most architectural designs land above the starting price for their size, while a spaced pattern on round tiers stays closer to it. Delivery location and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final number, and I quote your design in full, itemized, after we sketch it together. Flavor is chosen at your wedding cake tasting. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Modern Wedding Cake Questions, Answered

What is a modern wedding cake?

A modern wedding cake is designed around shape and structure rather than ornament: square or tall tiers, a single sculpted form, one strong color, or a pattern spaced across bare buttercream. The idea is clean even when the color is bold.

Is a modern wedding cake the same as a minimalist cake?

Not quite. A minimalist cake is about restraint in decoration. A modern cake is about structure, and it can be colorful, dark or sculpted, as long as one clear idea leads the design.

Can you make square wedding cake tiers?

Yes. Square tiers are one of the clearest modern shapes, and I build them with crisp, sharp edges. They take more structure than round tiers, which is reflected in the quote.

How much is a modern wedding cake?

Most couples invest $650 to $1,200. Two tiers start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings and three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115. Square tiers, extra height and sculpted forms usually land above the starting price for their size.

Do you deliver modern wedding cakes across Utah?

Yes. I deliver and style every cake on site anywhere in Utah, priced by location, and I travel for destination weddings.
