A Right-Sizing Guide
Sized for the room you actually have, not the one on the mood board.
Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and a reception-only celebration often needs less cake than the invitation count suggests. Small wedding cakes cover most of them: a single tier serves 6 to 38 guests at $150 to $250 depending on size, a two-tier starts from $450 for 20 to 60 servings, and a $100 kitchen cake quietly adds 38 servings if the list runs long. The design you choose moves the number from there.
This guide is about choosing the right size, not the lowest number. For the figures side by side, my guide to small wedding cake prices lists every size, the 2026 price guide has every tier, and you can see how a small cake carries a table in the single-tier gallery and the two-tier gallery.

Why Small Wedding Cakes Suit a Reception-Only Wedding
A reception-only wedding, where the ceremony happens somewhere else (a temple, a courthouse, a canyon overlook, a backyard) and friends and family gather afterward, changes how cake gets eaten. There is no seated dinner course where every plate receives a slice at the same moment. Guests arrive, find the couple, find the dessert table, and drift out again.
That changes the math. If your reception is an open house with people coming and going over a few hours, plan servings for the number you expect in the room when the cake is cut, and let a kitchen cake behind the scenes cover the late arrivals. The guest list sets the invitations; the cake table sets the cake.
The second reason is presence. A small cake on a styled table photographs as well as a tall one, because the camera frames the cake, not the room. One confident idea, a pressed-flower band, a single sugar bloom, a smooth finish in your exact palette, reads more clearly on one or two tiers than it would spread across four.
Single Tier or Two Tiers? A Sizing Table
Each tier stands about five inches tall. Start from the guest count you expect at the cake table, then read across.
| Guests at the Table | Cake | Servings | Starting From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 14 | 4″ or 6″ single tier | 6 or 14 | $150 or $170 |
| 15 to 38 | 8″ or 10″ single tier | 26 or 38 | $210 or $250 |
| 20 to 60 | Two-tier | 20, 40 or 60 | $450, $525 or $595 |
| 60 to 98 | 60-serving two-tier plus a kitchen cake | 98 | $695 |
| Beyond 98 | Three-tier | 48 to 115 | $650 |
Starting prices describe size. Hand piping, sugar flowers, painted work and sculpted bows add studio time, so most custom small wedding cakes land above the starting price for their size, and the quote you receive is itemized before you commit. Utah’s 3% sales tax and delivery by location are the other two lines on it. If the list has grown past sixty and you want every serving on display, my servings guide walks through the three-tier sizes.
Styling a Small Cake So It Owns the Table
Height comes from the stand, not the cake. A single tier on a tall pedestal, with candles and a few stems from the bouquet beside it, reads as the centerpiece it is. I keep two walnut pedestals, 12″ and 17″, available to rent with a $50 deposit, returned by the Wednesday after your wedding, and I style the cake on site at delivery so it arrives photo-ready.
Give the cake its own table rather than a corner of the dessert spread. A round table with a linen that picks up the palette, the cake centered, and room on either side for cupcakes from $42 a dozen, mini cupcakes from $24, or truffles from $30 keeps the cake as the focal point while the dessert table does the serving. My dessert table guide covers the pairings, and the elopement cakes page shows how much presence one tier can carry outdoors.
The Cutting Moment Still Happens
A smaller cake does not mean skipping the cut. At a reception-only celebration the cutting is often the one moment every guest in the room watches, so give it a time on the schedule rather than waiting for the line to thin. Tell your venue or coordinator that time, since venues handle cutting and service after the first slice, and ask them to remove the internal supports before plating.
If you want cake in the photos but need more servings than the display cake holds, the kitchen cake is sliced behind the scenes in the same flavors, and no one can tell which slice came from where. My two-tier guide covers the sizes in more detail.
What a Small Wedding Cake Includes
Every two-tier wedding cake includes the $50 tasting (complimentary, since every two-tier passes $300), a one-on-one design consultation, delivery and on-site styling by location quote, and a complimentary 4″ anniversary cake, baked fresh for your first anniversary rather than thawed from the freezer. Request it at least a month before the date and pick it up within 30 days of it.
Single-tier cakes keep the full custom process and the same design attention. The tasting is $50 for three cakes and three fillings, with extra samples at $10, and you choose any cake and filling from my signature menu. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My kitchen is not a dedicated allergen-free facility; cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made where nuts and soy are present, and dietary versions are quoted with your inquiry.

Small Wedding Cake Questions, Answered
How small can a wedding cake be?
My smallest wedding cake is a 4-inch single tier: 6 servings, about five inches tall, from $150. It is the same size I bake as the complimentary anniversary cake, and on a tall stand with a few stems beside it, it holds a cake table on its own.
Is a two-tier cake enough for a reception of 80 guests?
Usually, yes. A 60-serving two-tier from $595 with a $100 kitchen cake behind the scenes covers 98 servings, and at a reception where guests come and go you can plan for the number at the table when the cake is cut. If you want every serving on display, a three-tier starts from $650 for 48 to 115 servings.
Do small wedding cakes still include a tasting?
Two-tier cakes do: the $50 tasting is complimentary with any order over $300. With a single tier, add the tasting for $50 and try three cakes and three fillings, with extra samples at $10 each. Either way you choose any cake and filling from the signature menu.
Do you deliver small wedding cakes?
Yes. I deliver and style every cake on site anywhere in Utah, priced by location, and I travel for destination celebrations. A single tier gets the same careful delivery and styling as a five-tier cake.
Does a small wedding cake include the anniversary cake?
The complimentary 4-inch anniversary cake comes with every multi-tier order, so a two-tier qualifies and a single tier does not. Request it at least a month before your first anniversary and pick it up within 30 days of the date.
