A Dessert Table Guide

One real cake at the center, a hundred small bites around it, and every piece designed to belong together.

The best wedding dessert table ideas start with one real cake at the center, then build outward with two or three cupcake flavors, a tray of minis for grazing, and gourmet truffles tucked in between. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and a dessert table can sit beside a tiered cake or gather around a single-tier cutting cake. I bake every piece to order in my Provo studio and style the whole table on site, so it reads as one design rather than a buffet.

Below are the ideas I return to most, alongside real cakes and tables I have delivered. For dessert prices by the dozen, see my wedding cupcakes and dessert tables guide; for every cake tier, see the 2026 price guide; and for finished cakes, browse the gallery.

Wedding Dessert Table Ideas Built Around One Real Cake

A dessert table needs a focal point, and nothing does that better than a cake. It gives the photographer a place to aim, gives the two of you a cake-cutting moment, and tells guests where the sweets begin. Some couples keep a full tiered cake and add a smaller table of cupcakes and truffles beside it. Others choose a single-tier cake, $150 to $250 depending on size, and let the table carry the servings around it. If the whole celebration is reception-only, my small wedding cakes guide shows how to size the display cake for the room.

Either way, I design the cake first. Its palette, finish, and flavors become the brief for everything else on the table. If you are weighing a dessert table instead of a tiered cake, my guide to wedding cake alternatives compares both for 100 guests.

Piece Its Role on the Table Starting From
Single-tier cake The focal point and cake-cutting moment $150 to $250
Cupcakes The main serving, in any signature flavor $42/dozen
Filled cupcakes A second texture, with a filling inside $48/dozen
Mini cupcakes Two-bite grazing between dances $24/dozen
Gourmet truffles Small, rich accents tucked between $30/dozen
10″ double-layer kitchen cake 38 extra servings, cut behind the scenes $100

Design detail, delivery location, and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final price. Dessert pieces are added to your cake order, and the pricing page lists every tier with its servings.

Six Ideas I Return To

Vary the heights. A flat table reads as a buffet. Put the cake on a pedestal, then set cupcakes on tiered stands so the eye climbs from the linens to the topper. Wooden stands feel warm and garden-like; a slim metal tower feels more formal.

Echo the cake in the frosting. The simplest way to make a table look designed is to borrow the cake’s palette. For one reception I painted red and green florals on a white two-tier cake and circled it with pink and white cupcakes, so the whole table read as one piece.

Tell a flavor story. Choose one classic, one chocolate, and one surprise. Every cupcake can come from my signature menu: vanilla bean, lemon, red velvet, Biscoff, cinnamon, coconut, carrot, and more. Popular pairings like Churro, Pina Colada, and Lemon Raspberry translate beautifully to a cupcake. My flavor and filling guide walks through all of them.

Add a filled cupcake. A filling gives guests a small reward on the first bite. Strawberry mousse, lemon curd, dulce de leche, and whipped Nutella all work well inside a cupcake.

Plan for grazing. Minis fit in one hand between conversations, which makes them easy to enjoy through the evening. A tray of two or three flavors keeps the table full long after the cake is cut.

Tuck in truffles. Gourmet truffles fill the gaps between stands and add a darker, richer note. Chocolate Oreo, Lemon Oreo, Peanut Butter Oreo, and Mint Oreo are on the menu, with chocolate raspberry, raspberry lemonade, and seasonal flavors as well.

Dessert Table Questions

What should be on a wedding dessert table?

Start with a cake as the focal point, then add cupcakes in two or three flavors, a tray of mini cupcakes for grazing, and gourmet truffles between the stands. Vary the heights with pedestals and tiered stands, and repeat the cake’s colors in the frosting so the table reads as one design.

Do we still need a wedding cake if we have a dessert table?

You do not need a large one, but a cake gives the table its focal point and gives you a cake-cutting moment. A single-tier cake runs $150 to $250 depending on size, and the cupcakes and truffles around it carry the rest of the servings.

How much do wedding cupcakes and truffles cost?

Cupcakes start at $42 per dozen, filled cupcakes at $48, mini cupcakes at $24, and gourmet truffles at $30 per dozen. Design detail, delivery location, and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final price, and dessert pieces are added to your cake order.

Can the dessert table match our wedding cake?

Yes. I design the cake first, then carry its palette, finish, and flavors into the cupcakes and truffles. Every dessert comes from the same signature menu, and I arrange the whole table on site so it photographs as one piece.

How far ahead should we book a dessert table?

Book as soon as you have your date and venue. I am booking 2026 and 2027 now, with a limited number of dates each season, and a tasting is the best first step for choosing your table’s flavors.
