A Flavor Guide

Choose for your guests first, then for the two of you, and let the tasting settle the rest.

How to choose wedding cake flavors, in one sentence: give the largest tier a crowd-pleasing pairing, give a smaller tier a flavor the two of you genuinely love, and confirm both at a tasting before you sign. At Sweet E’s the tasting is $50 for three cakes and three fillings, complimentary with orders over $300, and it is the single most useful hour in the whole decision. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and the standard menu flavors you pick do not change that figure; tier count, servings, and design detail do.

My studio menu holds twelve cake flavors, fourteen fillings, and eight signature pairings, all baked to order in Provo and delivered across Utah. The full list lives on the wedding cake flavors guide and the menu page; this article is about narrowing it down. Servings and starting prices by tier are in the 2026 price guide, and the gallery shows what the finished cakes look like.

How to Choose Wedding Cake Flavors, Step by Step

Start with the room, not the menu. The bottom tier feeds the most people, so it should be a flavor almost nobody turns down. Vanilla bean with vanilla bean buttercream, the almond and raspberry pairing I simply call Wedding Cake, or chocolate raspberry all do that job well. A guest who is unsure about cake will still take a slice of any of these.

Then choose one for the two of you. A smaller tier is the place for the flavor that means something: the churro pairing because of a first date, coconut and pineapple curd because of the honeymoon, lemon raspberry because it is simply your favorite. Multi-tier cakes can carry a different flavor on each tier, so you are not choosing one flavor for everyone, you are choosing one flavor per tier.

Let the season have a vote. Bright, fruit-forward pairings read beautifully at a summer reception. Cinnamon, dulce de leche, and the seasonal pumpkin spice cake feel right when the leaves turn. The menu itself stays constant through the year; the season only helps you decide what will taste best on your date.

Balance the filling against the cake. A rich cake wants a filling with some brightness, which is why chocolate pairs so well with raspberry puree. A lighter cake can carry a richer filling, such as vanilla cake with strawberry mousse. If you are torn between two fillings for the same cake, that is exactly what the tasting is for.

Five Pairings That Make Choosing Easier

These five come straight from my signature menu and cover most of the ground couples are trying to cover. Every one of them can be tasted side by side.

Pairing The Combination Suits
Wedding Cake almond cake + raspberry puree + almond buttercream The classic choice
Chocolate Raspberry chocolate cake + raspberry puree + raspberry cream cheese Chocolate lovers
Lemon Raspberry lemon cake + raspberry puree + raspberry cream cheese Bright, summery
Churro cinnamon cake + dulce de leche + cinnamon buttercream Warm, autumn dates
Piña Colada coconut cake + pineapple curd + coconut buttercream Playful, tropical

One Flavor for the Whole Cake, or One per Tier?

Either works, and the guest count usually decides. A two-tier cake for 20 to 60 servings is often happiest with a single pairing on both tiers, so every slice is the one you chose together. From three tiers up there is room to mix: a crowd-pleaser on the bottom, something more adventurous above it. Jennifer, who never expected to like cinnamon cake, told me her guests enjoyed both flavors they chose. If your guest list outgrows the tiers, ask me at the tasting about a supplemental kitchen cake ($100, about 38 servings); the servings guide walks through how the numbers add up.

Let the Tasting Decide

1

Pick Three and Three

Choose three cakes and three fillings from the menu ahead of your $50 tasting. Extra samples are $10 each if you cannot narrow it down.

2

Taste Side by Side

Trying pairings next to each other is how favorites reveal themselves; a flavor that sounds right on paper often loses to the one beside it. To see where the tasting falls in the bigger picture, my wedding cake timeline walks every step from tasting to table.

3

Assign by Tier

Leave with a flavor for each tier, finalized alongside your design so the cake and its flavors are decided together.

The tasting is complimentary with orders over $300, which includes every multi-tier wedding cake. Read what to expect at a tasting, or see what the $50 covers before you book yours.

Dietary Needs and Flavor

Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. Cakes contain wheat (gluten), dairy, and eggs, and are prepared in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present. Dietary versions are quoted on inquiry, so mention any needs when you reach out and I will tell you which flavors translate best.

“We scheduled a tasting and were immediately impressed by the quality, professionalism, and range of options offered. All of the flavors were so delicious, but once we narrowed it down to our favorites, Erika once again impressed us on our wedding day.”

Choosing Wedding Cake Flavors, Answered

How do we choose our wedding cake flavors?

Give the largest tier a crowd-pleasing pairing, such as vanilla bean, the almond and raspberry Wedding Cake pairing, or chocolate raspberry, and give a smaller tier a flavor the two of you love. Then taste both at a $50 tasting (three cakes, three fillings, complimentary with orders over $300) before you decide.

Can a wedding cake have a different flavor on each tier?

Yes. Multi-tier cakes can carry a different flavor on each tier. Many couples put a familiar pairing on the bottom tier, which serves the most guests, and something more personal on a smaller tier above it.

What is the most popular wedding cake flavor?

The pairing I call Wedding Cake, almond cake with raspberry puree and almond buttercream, is a favorite at tastings, with chocolate raspberry and lemon raspberry close behind. The full menu holds twelve cake flavors and fourteen fillings.

Do we get to taste the flavors before we decide?

Yes. A tasting is $50 and includes three cakes and three fillings of your choice, complimentary with orders over $300. Extra samples are $10 each.

Do flavor choices change the price of the cake?

Standard menu flavors do not change the price; tier count, servings, design detail, delivery location, and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final figure. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly versions are quoted on inquiry.
