A Planning Guide

Every step between your first email and the first slice, in order.

A wedding cake timeline has six milestones: inquire as soon as your date and venue are set, book a tasting at least a week ahead, reserve your date with a signed contract and retainer, finalize design changes and your final payment one month before the wedding, then delivery and styling on the day. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and the timeline is what keeps that investment calm instead of rushed.

This guide walks the whole path, from tasting to table and on to your first anniversary. If your question is only about lead time, my guide on how far in advance to order a wedding cake answers it directly; this page covers everything that happens after you reach out.

Step One: Inquire Once Your Date and Venue Are Set

I take a limited number of weddings for each date, so the timeline starts the moment your date and venue are confirmed. Send your date, your venue and a rough guest count. I confirm availability and suggest a size, and if your list is still moving, my wedding cake servings guide helps you land on a number.

Step Two: Tasting and Design Consultation

Your wedding cake tasting doubles as the design consultation: forty-five minutes to an hour with three cakes, three fillings and a sketch built around your venue, florals and palette. Book it at least a week ahead. The tasting is $50 and complimentary with orders over $300, with the fee credited toward your cake. If flavors feel like the hard part, read my guide on how to choose wedding cake flavors before you come in. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Step Three: Reserve Your Date

Once the design feels right, a signed contract and a retainer reserve your date and lock in current pricing, and the retainer is applied to your final balance. From here your cake is on my calendar. Your quote is itemized: tier count and servings set the base, while design detail, delivery location and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final number. Every tier and serving is listed with my wedding cake prices.

Step Four: One Month Before the Wedding

One month out is the quiet deadline that matters most. Design changes, including size, palette, flavors and styling, can be made up to that point, and your final payment is due then too. It is also the right moment to confirm your final guest count, your reception schedule and the person at your venue who will receive the cake. If the guest list has shrunk, my guide to small wedding cakes shows how to right-size without losing presence.

Step Five: The Wedding Day

I time delivery with your venue and planner so the cake arrives after the tables are set and before the doors open, then I style it on site and position it for photos. Delivery is strongly recommended for every tiered cake and is quoted by your venue’s location, from receptions across the valley to the wedding cakes in Utah County I deliver closest to my studio. My notes on delivery and on-site setup cover the details.

Your venue handles the cutting and service. Ask them to remove internal supports and any non-edible pieces, such as ribbon, wire or fresh flowers, before plating. Summer dates add one more step, a shaded table and an earlier cutting, which my guide to summer wedding cakes explains. My guide to wedding cake cutting covers that part of the night in detail.

Step Six: Your First Anniversary

Every multi-tier wedding cake includes a complimentary 4″ anniversary cake, baked fresh rather than saved in the freezer. Request it at least a month before your anniversary and pick it up within thirty days of the date.
