The Painted Collection

Buttercream as a canvas, color laid on by hand, tier by tier.

Painted wedding cakes are tiers finished by hand with color: brushed florals, palette-knife blooms, watercolor washes or a whole landscape wrapped around the cake. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and because painting is done stroke by stroke in the studio, most painted designs land above the starting price for their size. Two tiers start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings, three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115.

Below are real painted cakes from my studio and what makes each one work, from a lupine field in violet and green to a copper mountain range at Sundance. If you are still gathering wedding cake ideas, the painted palette gallery shows the full collection, and every tier and serving is itemized in my guide to wedding cake prices.

What Makes Painted Wedding Cakes Different

Most decoration is added to a cake. Painting changes the surface itself. The tiers are finished smooth, then color goes on in layers, so the design reads as one continuous piece rather than a set of placed elements. It is the closest a cake comes to a framed print, and it photographs that way: flat light, clean edges, color that holds its shape in every frame.

Painted work also travels well across a room. A cascade of sugar flowers is at its best up close; a painted landscape or a field of lupines carries to the back of a reception hall. That makes painted wedding cakes a natural fit for large venues, high ceilings and couples who want the cake to read from the dance floor.

Four Ways I Paint a Cake

Style What It Looks Like Reads As
Brushed florals Single blooms and vines painted stem by stem Romantic
Palette knife Thick buttercream petals pressed on with a blade Textured
Landscape A mountain range, forest or river around the tiers Storytelling
Marble and wash Soft veining or blended color, often with gold Modern

The style usually follows the venue and the season. Palette-knife blooms suit a garden or a barn; a landscape suits a mountain venue where the view is already part of the day; marble suits a city ballroom. If you love texture as much as color, my buttercream flower cakes sit right beside these, and many couples blend the two.

Real Painted Cakes from My Studio

The lupine cake is three tall tiers painted in violet and green, with each stem placed so the field seems to keep growing past the edge of the cake. The garden cake carries pink roses and trailing vines over four tiers and was styled under a living arbor, where the painted leaves met the real ones.

For a wedding at Sundance, I painted a copper mountain range across white tiers so the cake echoed the peaks outside the window; it is one of the Sundance wedding cakes I have delivered up the canyon. Closer to home, two cakes from my Provo wedding cakes collection show the range: a sculpted mountain with a painted forest and river wrapping the tiers, and a two-tier navy marble finished with gold leaf for a celebration at the Bright Building.

The palette also shifts with the year. Terracotta tiers with white blossoms suit autumn; soft pinks and greens suit the season my spring wedding cakes guide covers. How Painting Shapes the Investment

Tier count and servings set the base, and the painting is added on top of it. A few painted blooms on a two-tier take far less studio time than a landscape that wraps three tiers, so painted designs range widely and most land above the starting price for their size. Delivery location and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final number, and I quote your design in full, itemized, after we sketch it together.

The flavors are your choice from the full signature menu, from lemon raspberry to churro, and your wedding cake tasting is where we settle them. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Painted Wedding Cake Questions, Answered

What is a painted wedding cake?

A painted wedding cake is finished by hand with color applied directly to the tiers, as brushed florals, palette-knife blooms, watercolor washes or a full landscape. The painting becomes the design itself rather than an element placed on top.

Are painted wedding cakes edible?

The painted buttercream and color are part of the cake and are eaten with it. Any non-edible pieces, such as internal supports or fresh flowers styled beside the painting, are removed by the venue before the cake is served.

Do painted wedding cakes cost more?

Usually, yes. Tier count and servings set the starting price, and painting adds studio time on top of it, so most painted designs land above the starting price for their size. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and I quote your design in full before you commit.

Can you paint our venue or a meaningful view on the cake?

Yes. I have painted mountain ranges, forests and rivers to echo a venue, and I sketch the design around photos you share at your tasting and design consultation.

Do you deliver painted wedding cakes across Utah?

Yes. I deliver and style every cake on site anywhere in Utah, priced by location, and I travel for destination weddings. Painted tiers are boxed and planned for the drive so the color arrives exactly as it left the studio.
