The Buttercream Garden

Soft petals, piped by hand, made to be eaten as happily as they are admired.

Buttercream flower cakes are wedding cakes decorated with blooms made entirely from buttercream, either piped petal by petal with a decorating tip or pressed onto the tiers with a palette knife, so every flower on the cake is edible. At Sweet E’s, most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in a buttercream flower wedding cake, and the final number is shaped by how many blooms you choose and how much of the cake they cover.

They are one of the signature looks of my Provo studio, and they sit somewhere between a painting and a garden: softer than sugar flowers, more personal than fresh stems, and matched to your palette down to the last leaf. What Makes Buttercream Flower Cakes Different

Most flowers on a wedding cake are either fresh stems tucked in at the venue or sugar flowers shaped and dried days ahead. Buttercream flower cakes take a third path. The flowers are made from the same silky buttercream that frosts the tiers, so they taste like the cake they sit on and soften into every slice.

I work in two styles. Piped flowers are built petal by petal with a decorating tip: full roses, ruffled ranunculus, many-petaled chrysanthemums and tiny buds that can climb a tier or gather in one generous cluster. Palette-knife flowers are pressed and swept onto the cake with a small knife, which gives them the loose, brushstroke quality of a painting. Both are edible, both are fully custom, and they can live happily on the same cake. Palette-knife blooms sit between the two, and my guide to painted wedding cakes shows where piping ends and painting begins.

Buttercream, Sugar or Fresh Flowers?

Each flower style has its place, and the right one depends on the look you want and how much of the decoration you would like to eat.

Flower Style Made From Best For
Piped buttercream Buttercream, piped petal by petal Dimensional roses, chrysanthemums and cascades you can slice and serve
Palette-knife buttercream Buttercream, pressed and swept with a knife A painterly, hand-painted look with soft color and movement
Sugar flowers Sugar paste, shaped and dried Lifelike, sculptural blooms made to be admired rather than eaten
Fresh flowers Real blooms Echoing your bouquet exactly, styled on the cake at delivery

If lifelike petals are what you are after, the sugar flowers gallery shows how they look on real cakes. My guide to sugar flowers and fresh flowers on a wedding cake compares the two side by side.

A Real Cake: Laicie and Corey’s Chrysanthemums

For Laicie and Corey’s wedding at Walker Farms in Lehi, they chose a two-tier white cake with a cascade of buttercream flowers in pink, yellow and white spilling from the top tier down the side. Chrysanthemums are some of my favorite flowers to pipe, and theirs are the golden, many-petaled blooms woven between the roses. The white tiers stay clean and quiet so the flowers can do all the talking.

It is a lovely example of how buttercream flowers can feel abundant without covering every inch of the cake. If you are planning a celebration nearby, see my notes on wedding cakes at Walker Farms and across Lehi.

Choosing a Palette for Your Buttercream Blooms

Because every petal is tinted by hand, the palette can follow your florals, linens and season exactly. A few directions from the cakes in the carousel above:

Soft and romantic. Blush, ivory and cream roses read timeless in any season and photograph beautifully against white linens.

Earthy and warm. White palette-knife flowers on a terracotta cake, or bright orange blooms tied with a chocolate ribbon, suit fall celebrations and rich, rust-toned decor. My guide to fall wedding cakes in Utah shows ten autumn cakes and the palettes behind them.

Cool and airy. Pale blue and sage petals on ivory tiers feel fresh for spring and summer weddings.

Rich and vintage. Deep red buttercream roses crowning Lambeth-style ruffles pair two looks from my 2027 wedding cake trends guide, and the vintage piping gallery has more.

Pricing a Buttercream Flower Cake

The starting price follows the size of the cake, and the final quote reflects the design. A single cluster of blooms on a smooth tier sits close to the starting price, while flowers climbing every tier take more hours at the piping bag. Here is where each size begins:

Cake Servings From
Single tier 6–38 $150
Two tier 20–60 $450
Three tier 48–115 $650
Four and five tier 85–210 $875

Every multi-tier wedding cake includes a tasting, a design consultation and a complimentary mini cake for your first anniversary. Delivery location and 3% sales tax are added to the final quote. For every size and flavor, visit the pricing page or browse the flavor and filling guide.

Buttercream Flower Cake Questions

What are buttercream flower cakes?

Buttercream flower cakes are cakes decorated with flowers made entirely from buttercream, either piped petal by petal with a decorating tip or pressed on with a palette knife. Every bloom is edible, and the colors are matched to your wedding palette.

Are buttercream flowers edible?

Yes. Buttercream flowers are made from the same buttercream that frosts the cake, so every petal can be sliced and served with the tier it sits on.

How much do buttercream flower cakes cost?

Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in a buttercream flower wedding cake at Sweet E’s, and every hand-piped bloom adds studio time. Two tiers for 20 to 60 guests start from $450 and three tiers for 48 to 115 from $650. The final price depends on how many blooms the design calls for, how much of the cake they cover, delivery location and 3% sales tax.

Should I choose buttercream flowers or sugar flowers?

Choose buttercream flowers for a soft, painterly look that is fully edible. Choose sugar flowers for lifelike, sculptural blooms that are made to be admired rather than eaten. We can talk through both at your design consultation.

Can buttercream flowers match my wedding florals?

Yes. Bring photos of your bouquet, linens and venue to your design consultation, and the buttercream is tinted to echo them, from blush and sage to terracotta and deep red.
