The Vintage Collection
Ruffles, swags and pearls, piped by hand one line at a time.
Vintage wedding cakes are cakes decorated in the old over-piped style: layered ruffles, draped swags, beading, tiny garlands and pearl borders built up by hand on every tier. Most people know the look as Lambeth piping. At Sweet E’s, most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in a vintage wedding cake once the tier count, the amount of piping and the delivery are settled.
Of every look I design right now, vintage piping is the one I expect to age the best, because it was never really a trend in the first place. You can see it on real cakes in my vintage piping gallery and across the full cake gallery, compare sizes and servings on the 2026 price guide, and see how it sits beside bows and texture in my wedding cake trends for 2027.

What Makes Vintage Wedding Cakes Different
Modern cakes are mostly about surface: smooth sides, one sharp edge, one sculpted detail. A vintage cake is about depth. Each border is piped, then piped over again, so a single ruffle can carry three or four lines stacked on top of one another. That layering is where the Lambeth name comes from. Joseph Lambeth was a decorator whose 1930s book on over-piping set out the method, and the cakes in old wedding photographs owe a great deal to it.
The version couples ask me for now is lighter than the originals. Instead of covering every inch in white, I leave room for each tier to breathe: a crown of ruffles at the top edge, a swag through the middle, a line of beading at the base. Some couples add a single color, peach blossoms on ivory or navy vines on white, and that one accent makes a very traditional technique look like it belongs to this decade. If piped flowers are the part you love most, my guide to buttercream flower cakes goes deeper on blooms.
The Piping Details, Explained
| Detail | What It Looks Like | Where I Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Ruffles | Soft, layered frills piped in rows | Top edges and the base of each tier |
| Swags | Scalloped loops hanging between two points | Through the middle of a tier, often doubled |
| Beading and pearls | Rows of tiny piped dots | Borders, and beneath a swag to finish it |
| Garlands and vines | Small piped flowers and leaves in a trailing line | Wrapped around a tier in one accent color |
| Over-piping | A second and third line piped on top of the first | Anywhere the design wants more depth and shadow |
Vintage Wedding Cake Pricing in Utah
Vintage piping is custom design work, so expect it to add to your quote. The prices below are starting points for each size, set by tier count and servings, before any design is added. Every ruffle and swag is piped by hand, and layered borders on four tiers take far more studio time than smooth tiers with a single bow, so most vintage designs land above the starting price for their size. I quote the piping honestly during the design consultation.
| Cake | Starts At | Servings |
|---|---|---|
| Two tier | $450 | 20 to 60 |
| Three tier | $650 | 48 to 115 |
| Four and five tier | $875 | 85 to 210 |
Every multi-tier wedding cake includes the tasting, the design consultation and a complimentary mini cake on your first anniversary. Delivery is quoted by location, and Utah charges 3% sales tax. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
Vintage Piping From Two Tiers to Five
The style works at any size, but it reads differently at each one. On two tiers, piping becomes jewelry: one ruffle crown and a string of pearls can carry the whole design, which suits an intimate reception. On three tiers the swags have room to repeat and build a rhythm. On four or five tiers the height lets garlands wrap and cascade, and the cake starts to feel like the centerpiece of the room.
Piping is the part guests photograph, and flavor is the part they remember. A tasting is $50 for three cakes and three fillings, complimentary with orders over $300, and it is the easiest way to settle the inside before we design the outside. The full menu lives in my flavors and fillings guide, and the rest of my work is on the Utah wedding cakes page.

Vintage Wedding Cake Questions
How much does a vintage wedding cake cost in Utah?
Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in a vintage wedding cake, and layered hand piping usually places a design above the starting price for its size. Two tiers for 20 to 60 guests start from $450, three tiers for 48 to 115 from $650, and four and five tiers for 85 to 210 from $875. I quote the piping during the design consultation. Delivery is quoted by location and 3% sales tax applies.
What is Lambeth piping on a wedding cake?
Lambeth piping is an over-piping technique where borders are piped and then piped over again, building layered ruffles, swags, beading and garlands. It is named after Joseph Lambeth, whose 1930s book set out the method, and it is the look most people mean by a vintage wedding cake.
Can a vintage cake be simple instead of fully piped?
Yes. Many vintage designs use only a ruffle crown, a single swag and a pearl border, with smooth space between them. A two-tier cake with one or two piped details feels romantic without looking busy, and it takes less studio time than a fully over-piped design.
Can we add color to vintage piping?
Yes. A single accent color works best, such as peach blossoms on ivory or navy vines on white, piped as a trailing garland around each tier. I match the shade to your florals or linens during the design consultation, so the color ties the cake to the rest of the room.
How far in advance should we book a vintage wedding cake?
As soon as your venue is booked. I am taking 2026 and 2027 dates now, a limited number each season. Hand-piped designs are planned at your consultation, so booking early leaves time to sketch and refine every detail.
