The Color Collection
Blue on a wedding cake can whisper or make a statement. The craft is in choosing which.
Blue wedding cakes work best when the blue has one clear job: a pale or dusty blue finish across the tiers, a single navy tier with ivory above it, or blue painted and piped details on a white cake. Every blue cake shown here is one I designed and delivered for a real Utah celebration, and most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, with the final figure set by size, design detail and delivery.
Below I walk through the shades I reach for most, the techniques that carry them, and how blue pairs with gold and ivory. For sizes and tiers, see my wedding cake prices, and for more color stories, the color and tone gallery.

Which Shades Make the Best Blue Wedding Cakes?
Blue covers a wide range, and each shade behaves differently on a cake table. The pale and dusty blues read as soft and romantic, the way a pastel does, and they can cover every tier without overwhelming the room. Teal sits between blue and green and looks beautiful as an ombre, deepest at the base and fading toward ivory at the top. Navy is the dramatic choice: rich, formal and striking against white, which is why I usually give it a single tier or a defined panel rather than the whole cake.
| Shade | Where it shines |
|---|---|
| Pale and dusty blue | An all-over buttercream finish with white flowers or pearls; soft, airy and photographs well in daylight. |
| Teal | Ombre tiers that fade to ivory, paired with ivory roses and fresh greenery. |
| Navy | One tier, a geode or a panel of color, framed by white tiers and gold detail. |
| Blue as an accent | Piped or painted flowers, brushstrokes or fresh blooms on a white cake; the most flexible option. |
How the Blue Gets on the Cake
The technique matters as much as the shade. A tinted buttercream finish gives you a smooth, even color, like the pale blue two-tier with white palette knife flowers and pearls. Marbling swirls blue, white and grey together for a stone-like surface, as on the marbled cake I delivered to The Bright Building. Painting lets blue move freely: loose brushstrokes with gold leaf, or a palette knife mountain range with piped evergreens, a design that feels made for Utah. If painted work draws you in, my guide to painted wedding cakes goes deeper.
Piping and flowers are the gentlest way in. A white cake covered in piped dark blue blooms, like the one at The Caledonia, keeps the structure classic while the color does the talking. Fresh blue flowers on a ridged ivory cake, as at The Studio Draper, bring in color with almost no commitment on the tiers themselves.
Pairing Blue with Gold, Ivory and Your Florals
Blue and gold is one of my favorite pairings. On the navy geode cake at the Lodge at Blue Sky, a gold monogram and a gold-edged crystal seam turned a deep color into something celebratory rather than heavy; you can see more of that warmth in my gold wedding cakes. Ivory is the other natural partner: a white tier above a blue one gives the eye a place to rest, and white sugar roses soften navy beautifully. For a more restrained palette, a white wedding cake with a single blue detail can be just as memorable, and soft blue sits happily among the pastel wedding cakes I design for spring.
The best blue is the one that belongs to your day. I build the color around your linens, bridesmaid dresses and florals, so bring swatches or photos to your design consultation. For more directions to explore, browse my wedding cake ideas.

Blue Wedding Cake Questions
What shades work best for blue wedding cakes?
Pale and dusty blue work well as an all-over finish, teal looks beautiful as an ombre that fades to ivory, and navy is strongest as a single tier or panel framed by white. Blue can also appear only as piped, painted or fresh flowers on a white cake.
How much does a blue wedding cake cost in Utah?
Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake. Two-tier designs start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings and three-tier designs from $650; the final price depends on size, design detail and delivery location.
Can you match the blue to my wedding colors?
Yes. Bring a fabric swatch, an invitation or your florist’s palette to your design consultation, and I will build the blue on your cake around it.
Should the whole cake be blue or just an accent?
Soft blues can cover every tier, while deeper shades like navy usually look best on one tier or as a detail. Blue flowers, brushstrokes or piping on a white cake give you color with the most flexibility.
