Gold Leaf, Gilding and Warm Metallics
A little gold, placed with intention, on real cakes from my studio.
Gold wedding cakes use metallic detail to add warmth and light: gold leaf pressed into buttercream, hand-painted gold across a whole tier, gold lace or beading, or a gilded stand beneath an all-white cake. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake. Two tiers start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings and three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115, and hand-applied gold work usually lands above the starting price for its size.
Below are the ways I use gold, each shown on a real cake I designed for a Utah celebration. Every tier and serving size is listed with my wedding cake prices, and the gallery holds many more designs.

What Makes Gold Wedding Cakes Work
Gold works best as an accent with a job to do. It can frame a cascade of flowers or tie the cake to brass candlesticks and the warm tones of a mountain lodge. When it covers too much of the cake, it starts to compete with the design instead of finishing it.
The question I ask first is where the eye should land. On some cakes that is a single painted tier; on others it is a scatter of leaf around the florals, or a thin gold line that separates two colors.
Four Ways to Use Gold
| Technique | What It Looks Like | Reads As |
|---|---|---|
| Gold leaf | Flakes or fragments pressed into buttercream | Organic |
| Painted gold | A brushed or fully gilded tier, or a painted scene | Dramatic |
| Gold detail | Lace, beading, monograms or a thin gold line | Tailored |
| Gold base | An all-white cake on a gilded stand or pedestal | Classic |
Real Gold Wedding Cakes from My Studio
The boldest version is a fully gilded tier. For a waterfall wedding at Hidden Falls, the two upper tiers were painted gold with soft brushed edges and finished with a cascade of white orchids. Painted gold can also tell a story: for a celebration at Snowpine Lodge in Alta, I painted gold mountains and a single pine across smooth white buttercream, a quieter take on the hand-painted work in my guide to painted wedding cakes.
Gold leaf is the most versatile option. Scattered across black buttercream with white florals, it gives a dark cake depth, the look my black wedding cake page explores. On a blush two-tier it reads softer, and on a semi-naked cake at Wall Brothers Event Center in Santaquin it picked up the mauve flowers and the wood slice beneath. Pressed into textured white buttercream beside a single orange rose, as on a cake for the Springville Museum of Art, it adds just enough shine to the finish.
Gold detail suits couples who want structure. A navy and white two-tier for the Lodge at Blue Sky carried a gold monogram and a geode seam edged in gold, and a navy and gold marble cake for the Bright Building used gold to make the navy glow. Gold lace climbing a tall white cake framed lavender and blush sugar flowers. For the classic route, a grand five-tier cake on a gold pedestal lets the stand do the work. My guide to wedding cake decorations covers pearls, bows and other details that pair well with gold. For navy, teal and dusty blue designs that pair with gold, see my guide to blue wedding cakes.
Pairing Gold with Your Palette
Gold is at home with ivory and white, and an all-white cake with one gold element is a timeless choice; see my guide to white wedding cakes for that foundation. Navy, black, emerald and burgundy make gold look richer, while blush, peach and terracotta keep it warm and romantic. For a clean, architectural look, a single gold line or a gilded geometric stand fits the approach in my guide to modern wedding cakes. If you are still collecting inspiration, my wedding cake ideas page is a good place to start.
What Gold Detail Adds to the Investment
Tier count and servings set the base. Gold leaf is laid on by hand and painted gilding takes careful layering, so most gold designs land above the starting price for their size. Delivery location and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final number, and I quote your design in full, itemized, after we sketch it together. Flavor is chosen at your wedding cake tasting. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Gold Wedding Cake Questions, Answered
What is a gold wedding cake?
A gold wedding cake uses metallic detail as part of its design: gold leaf pressed into buttercream, a hand-painted gold tier, gold lace or beading, or a gilded stand beneath the cake. Most use gold as an accent rather than covering every tier.
Can you add gold leaf to a buttercream wedding cake?
Yes. Every cake on this page is buttercream. Gold leaf can be scattered in flakes, clustered around florals, or pressed into a textured finish.
What colors go best with gold on a wedding cake?
Ivory and white are the classic pairing. Navy, black, emerald and burgundy make gold look richer, while blush, peach and terracotta keep it soft and warm.
How much is a gold wedding cake?
Most couples invest $650 to $1,200. Two tiers start from $450 for 20 to 60 servings and three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115. Hand-applied gold leaf and painted gilding add studio time, so most gold designs land above the starting price for their size.
Do you deliver gold wedding cakes across Utah?
Yes. I deliver and style every cake on site anywhere in Utah, priced by location, and I travel for destination weddings.
