A Planning Guide

The first slice is yours; the rest is a plan between me, your venue and you.

Wedding cake cutting happens in two parts: the two of you make the first cut at a scheduled moment, then your venue’s staff remove the supports and any non-edible decorations, slice the cake and serve it. I deliver and style the cake before the doors open, so the cutting plan is really about telling your venue three things: when, how many servings, and what comes off before plating. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and a clear cutting plan is what makes every serving count.

This guide covers who does what on the day, how servings are estimated, and the small details couples forget. For the whole sequence from tasting to delivery, see my wedding cake timeline.

Once your cake is delivered and styled, it belongs to the room. Your venue provides the table, linens, serving utensils and staff, and it handles the cutting and service from the first slice onward. Ask for a stable, level cake table, away from direct sun and heat, and confirm who on the venue team will receive the cake.

What Comes Off Before Plating

Tiered cakes are built with internal supports, and many designs carry decorations that are not edible: floral wires, ribbon, some pearls and fresh flowers. All of them are removed before the cake is served. I point them out when we plan the design, and it helps to pass the same note to your venue coordinator so the kitchen team knows before the night begins. Your florist confirms that any fresh flowers they provide are safe to use on a cake. My guide to wedding cake decorations covers which details are which.

How Servings Are Estimated

Serving counts are estimates, and the real number depends on how the cake is portioned. Generous slices mean fewer servings; careful, even slices mean the cake reaches everyone. Tell your venue the serving count from your quote so they can portion to it. Two tiers serve 20 to 60, three tiers 48 to 115, and four and five tiers 85 to 210, and my wedding cake servings guide helps you match a cake to your guest list.

If you want more servings than the display cake holds, a $100 kitchen cake is sliced behind the scenes in the same flavors, so the display stays the size you love. That is often the right answer for a reception-only celebration, which my guide to small wedding cakes walks through.

Timing the Cutting Moment

Give the cutting a fixed time on your schedule rather than waiting for the room to thin out. It is one of the few moments every guest watches, and it lets the venue serve cake while people are still there to enjoy it. For warm-weather and outdoor receptions, plan the cutting earlier in the evening; my guide to summer wedding cakes explains why.

There is no need to save the top tier. Every multi-tier wedding cake includes a complimentary 4″ anniversary cake baked fresh for your first anniversary, which is why I tell couples you don’t need to preserve your wedding cake.

Cake Stands and Cutting Sets

I keep two walnut pedestals, 12″ and 17″, and a cutting set available to rent with a $50 deposit, returned by the Wednesday after your wedding. Mention it with your inquiry and I will bring the stand and style the cake on it at delivery. Delivery is quoted by your venue’s location, and my notes on delivery and on-site setup cover arrival. Every tier and serving is listed with my wedding cake prices, and flavors are chosen at your wedding cake tasting. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Wedding Cake Cutting Questions, Answered

Who cuts the wedding cake?

The two of you make the first cut, then your venue’s staff take over. Venues handle the cutting and service, including removing the internal supports and any non-edible decorations before the cake is plated.

When should we cut the wedding cake?

At a fixed time on your schedule rather than at the end of the night, so guests are still there to watch and enjoy it. For warm or outdoor receptions, plan the cutting earlier in the evening.

How many servings will our wedding cake give?

Serving counts are estimates that depend on how the cake is portioned. Two tiers serve 20 to 60, three tiers 48 to 115, and four and five tiers 85 to 210. Share the count from your quote with your venue so they can portion to it.

Do we need to save the top tier?

No. Every multi-tier wedding cake includes a complimentary 4-inch anniversary cake baked fresh for your first anniversary, so the whole wedding cake can be enjoyed on the day.

Can we rent a cake stand and cutting set?

Yes. Two walnut pedestals, 12 and 17 inches, and a cutting set are available with a $50 deposit, returned by the Wednesday after your wedding.
