Details That Make the Design

Pearls, bows and texture, chosen with restraint and placed by hand.

The wedding cake decorations couples ask me for most are pearls, sculpted bows, textured buttercream, vintage piping and flowers, sugar or fresh. One well-chosen detail usually does more than five competing ones. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200 in their wedding cake, and because each of these details is made or placed by hand, most decorated designs land above the starting price for their size: two tiers from $450 for 20 to 60 servings, three tiers from $650 for 48 to 115.

Below, each detail is shown on a real cake from my studio, with notes on where it works and what it asks of the design. For more finished cakes set side by side, my wedding cake ideas page and the decorative detail gallery go further, and every tier is itemized with my wedding cake prices.

Choosing Wedding Cake Decorations That Work Together

A cake reads best when one detail leads and everything else supports it. Pearls look richest on smooth white or blush; a sculpted bow wants clean tiers with nothing competing; texture and piping carry a design on their own and need only a few flowers. I start every design by asking what you want guests to notice first, then build the rest of the cake around that answer. If shape matters more to you than ornament, my guide to modern wedding cakes covers square tiers, sculpted forms and color blocking. For metallic accents, my guide to gold wedding cakes shows gold leaf, painted gilding and gold detail on real cakes.

Detail Where It Works Reads As
Pearls Smooth buttercream, blush or ivory tiers Romantic
Sculpted bows Tall, clean tiers with space around them Statement
Texture Pleats, swirls and combed finishes Modern
Vintage piping Garlands, swags and over-piped borders Nostalgic
Flowers Sugar flowers or fresh blooms styled on site Garden

Pearls

Pearls are quiet until the light hits them. On a three-tier cake at Copper Creek Event Center, I studded blush tiers with pearls and let a few fresh blooms finish it, and the cake read as elegant from across the room and detailed up close. It sits among the wedding cakes in Salt Lake City I deliver up the valley. A looser scatter of pearls on white buttercream gives the same feeling with a softer, more modern hand.

Sculpted Bows and Ribbon

Bows are one of the strongest details in current designs, and they feature in my notes on wedding cake trends for 2027. A sculpted bow can wrap two tiers in blush, or tie a tall white cake with ribbon tails that fall to the table. The rule is space: a bow needs smooth tiers and very little else, so the shape can carry the whole design.

Texture, Piping and Flowers

Textured finishes, from swirl pleats to fine combing, give a white cake depth without adding color. Vintage piping goes further, with garlands, swags and layered borders; my guide to vintage wedding cakes shows how far that style can go. Flowers can be sugar, shaped petal by petal in the studio, or fresh, styled on site at delivery, and my comparison of sugar flowers and fresh flowers covers how to choose. For a bolder direction, the same details look striking in black, as my black wedding cake page shows, and color can be painted straight onto the tiers, as in my painted wedding cakes.

What Decorations Add to the Investment

Tier count and servings set the base. Sugar flowers, sculpted bows, hand piping and placed pearls each add studio time, so most decorated designs land above the starting price for their size, and the more of the cake a detail covers, the more it adds. Delivery location and Utah’s 3% sales tax set the final number, and your quote is itemized after we sketch the design together. Some decorations, such as ribbon, wire, certain pearls and fresh flowers, are not edible and are removed by your venue before the cake is served.

Flavor is chosen separately at your wedding cake tasting. Dairy-free and gluten-friendly options are available, contact me for flavor details. My cakes contain wheat, dairy and eggs and are made in a kitchen where nuts and soy are present.

Wedding Cake Decoration Questions, Answered

What are the most popular wedding cake decorations?

The details I am asked for most are pearls, sculpted bows and ribbon, textured buttercream, vintage piping, and flowers, either sugar flowers made in the studio or fresh blooms styled on site. Most of my favorite cakes use one of them as the lead and keep the rest quiet.

Are the pearls and bows on a wedding cake edible?

Some are and some are not. Ribbon, wire, certain pearls and fresh flowers are not edible, so your venue removes them, along with the internal supports, before the cake is served. I note which pieces come off when we plan the design.

Do decorations change the price of a wedding cake?

Yes. Tier count and servings set the starting price, and handmade details such as sugar flowers, sculpted bows, piping and placed pearls add studio time, so most decorated designs land above the starting price for their size. Most couples invest $650 to $1,200.

Can we bring our own flowers for the cake?

Yes. Fresh flowers from your florist can be styled on the cake at delivery, and your florist confirms that the blooms they provide are safe to use on a cake.

How many decorations should a wedding cake have?

Usually one lead detail and one or two supporting ones. A cake with a single strong idea, such as a bow, pearls or vintage piping, reads more clearly in photos than a cake that carries everything at once.
